About Me: CHICOSCI officially formed back in 2000, when vocalist Miguel Chavez, guitarists Mong Alcaraz, and Sonny Baquisal, bassist Carlos Calderon, and drummer Joel Salvador all decided to join (and win) an interschool Battle of the Bands. Since then, CHICOSCI’s career has gone from an after-school activity to a full-time profession. The first two albums Revenge of the Giant Robot (2001) and Method of Breathing (2002) were released under major label EMI Philippines. The single “Sink or Swim” from their debut effort, established the band as one of the forerunners of the new generation of rock. The song garnered several accolades including Best Directed Video for the 2001 MTV Pilipinas Awards. Their success continued with their critically-acclaimed sophomore album. Method of Breathing allowed further recognition for CHICOSCI as the song “Paris” dominated the Philippines’ only rock station’s charts for over a year. “Paris” held the number 1 position for more than 52 weeks on NU 107’s countdown, which ultimately gave CHICOSCI the NU 107’s Song of the Year award in 2002. In 2004, the band released the album Icarus under Viva Records. Never satisfied a and always trying out new things, CHICOSCI further redefined their sound with the release of its third album. Touted as their most experimental record, Icarus brought the band into even greater heights when they were named MTV’s Lokal Artist of the Month in May 2004. The singles “Shallow Graves”, and “An Argument” both landed spots in NU 107’s weekly and year-end countdowns. In 2006 however, CHICOSCI finally found mainstream success with the release of its new self-titled album under MCA Music. Originally released independently, the new album is now repackaged with 15 songs plus a music video. Having been in the studio for more than a year, the band boasts this record as being their best work to date. A self-produced effort, the band again attempts to give listeners something new to look forward to. Focusing more on catchier melodies and earnest lyrics, the new album redefines the band’s already distinct sound with MTV-generation pop sensibilities. Their most recent video for the single “Seven Black Roses” has dominated the Philippines’ music channel MYX, ranking number 1 on the daily, weekly, OPM, and Hit Chart countdowns. The said single has also penetrated other radio stations’ charts – Magic 89.9, RX 93.1, HitFM 99.5 (former 99.5 RT), and Jam 88.3. Pop stations around the country have begun to welcome CHICOSCI’s brand of music and audiences have responded well. Their earlier single, “A Promise”, was no push over as well. Its video also reached top spots in MYX charts peaking at number 3 on the daily and weekly countdowns and number 1 on the OPM countdown. “A Promise” also went to number 1 on NU 107 countdown. The repackaged album is well on its way to gold status as it has reached top spots on the best-selling charts of major record bars in the Philippines, including Music One-Tower Records and Odyssey Music. As of late, CHICOSCI is still busy promoting their self-titled record through TV and radio guestings, gigs, and events here in Manila and in the provinces. CHICOSCI is also fresh from a successful promo tour in Malaysia and Singapore in late 2006. Aside from this, they continue to play for annual school fairs, corporate events, and variety shows.
