Have any of you guys been beaten up?

Last week, while chatting with my officemates about a whole bunch of random stuff, fights became part of the conversation.  Now, im not the kind of person who gets into fights.  Maybe in high school sure but we were all kids in high school and i think that doesn't really count much.

One particular fight which i remember quite clearly was this one time i was on holiday in manila after living in boracay for a few months.  I was in my car in the parking lot about to do something "fun" with 2 other friends when someone knocked on my window.  Thinking this dude was gonna ask if i was leaving (so that he could take my parking), i opened the door to let him know i was just "doing" something in the car but was gonna go back inside.  But, there were no words.  Instead, when i opened the door, he suddenly hit me in my face with his fist!  In the same second, another one of them kicked me on my left side of my rid cage.  Then before i knew it, they dragged me out of the car so that their other friends could join in beating me up.  In the end, there were 5 of them, and me alone cuz my 2 friends in the car couldn't get out.  Yup, all the doors of that old car could only be opened from the outside except for the driver side which is where i came from.  Too bad i never quite made that clear, which led them to trying to open the door with no luck!

It took about a minute of them kicking and punching me while i was on the floor.  I remember crawling to the grassy area since i was on the concrete ground but they pulled me back to the parking lot, but i crawled back to the grass hahaha!  I protected my head while saying "Hoy kausapin nyo nga muna ako!"  Of course, not a single one of them did and carried on hitting me.

When it was all over, i had a little bruise on the back of my head and a tiny scratch on my back.  I was surprised that after a minute of 5 guys beating me up with my not even being able to defend myself, that i wasn't hurt at all.  Especially considering that these guys were part of a group that got into fights and trained regularly.

Yeah they tried to pretend that it was all this mistaken identity bullshit but i know, and it was later admitted, and apologized for, that i was really their target.

Ri**ie actually i reckon is the guy who sent for me.  He was part of a barkada of war freaks that enjoyed getting into fights here and there and for what ill never know.  But he didn't like it when i told my best friend (his girlfriend) that i missed her after having been so close to her the last 10+ years then suddenly moving to a tiny island away from everyone and everything i knew.  Of course i said that she could stay with me if she ever came and that i loved and missed her but never did i think that he would misinterpret that coming from me since we had started hanging out and doing stuff together as well.  Asshole fucking sent for me pa after all that "friendship".

But anyway, its fine now and i think ive had my share of "revenge" in my own ways against him and his group of fuck-ups that couldn't even face me nor make the fight even somewhat fair by giving some kind of warning.  They're happily married now and Lala and I are still friends.  Richie and i never see each other nor do i care to see him or his friends.  As for the bruise on my head and scratch on my back, they were so small they weren't even there the next day i wonder how they could ever have hurt anyone?!

I know its not the most interesting of fights but since i dont have much to share, thats that.

Share your stories!  Im curious about the fights of ten years ago to the fights of today :)

Hey, peeps.
I just got home from Tracks where Angee Rozul and I just finished work on
the live reunion album. I'm attached to the project as record producer.

This will be the first album since Circus that's not produced by Robin
Rivera, though this is not the first time for me to produce an Eraserheads
track. I produced their version of Manila for the Hotdog tribute album,
though I wasn't properly credited on the inlay.

Anyway, the album sounds great. Angee and I also made sure that the "crowd
moments" were properly highlighted, specially yung mga sigaw ng "group hug!"
and yung mga sing-along parts.

I'll listen to the whole album again tomorrow (pagod na tenga ko) and see if
there are last-minute tweaks. I'll also give copies to the boys so they can
listen and make objections (hopefully none, heheh) before the disc goes to
the duplicators.

If all goes well, the CD will be in stores soon. The album cover and inlay
is being designed by Cynthia Bauzon-Arre. I'm excited to see the final
product.

Cheers.
Sancho

I was invited to come to the 2nd rehearsals of RJ’s 45th Anniversary Super Sessions. Arriving at around 7pm was pretty good timing. Some had just arrived while others were grabbing a bite to eat off the buffet table while others had a few beers downstairs, and the rest were onstage rehearsing for their numbers.

After a few quick hello’s downstairs and around the room, I had a quick meal with Rayms, Zach, and Aia. I’m not exactly sure who was onstage besides Joey Puyat and Chikoy Pura but I did recognize the others from passed bands I’ve seen, most especially from the old school blues circuit. American Woman was the track they were playing and they pretty much had it down the first time they went for it. Good song, I still enjoy it everytime I hear it! Before long a whole new set of musicians were onstage playing yet another classic track! More notable to me, naturally, were the people I knew. So when Cookie Chua shared the stage with Kakoi Legazpi, that was a pretty big deal for me. Cookie is so cute by the way, she still carries a lapad with her wherever she goes and that to me is one of the most memorable things about her. (her and my mom used to get wasted in our living room while nino and I jammed beatles songs in my room in the early 90’s).

photos can be found on http://www.odysseylive.net/miggy/albums/1987/

After watching them and taking a few snapshots, I had a few chats with some old friends and learned of a few jams that I’d missed from having come late. Bea La’o played a few songs, I’m a huge fan of the way that woman plays the drums! I missed Louie Talan’s rehearsals as well. Nicole Asensio was done as well but was hanging out. I also know that a lot of people who were in the line up weren’t there either such as Ely Buendia and Lolita Carbon, Sampaguita along with Mark Abaya and Kevin Roy weren’t there either but I know that they’re on the line up too. Probably the most moving rehearsal I saw that night would’ve been watching Rayms do a couple of Eraserheads songs with RJ, Nino Avenido, Aia De Leon, RJ Jr., and Zach Lucero. Pare Ko and Magasin were the two chosen songs and it was great to hear. Pepe Smith and Rayms, now joined by Johnny Alegre covered Juan Dela Cruz’s Balong Malalim and was a big hit as well to the captivated, and drunk!, crowd that sat with full bellies, good vibes and over flowing free beers!

Its too bad I had to get moving before it even hit 9pm but it’s alright, with any luck ill be at the next rehearsal as well! If not, I was already assured a backstage pass for me and my band on the night of the concert itself and am just really glad to somehow be a part of this crazy amazing experience. Wendell, if you’re reading this, sama ako with you and Cowboy, sama ako dyan! Kakoi, one two three four five six se ven eight nine ten! Hahaha! Cookie, tagay! Rayms, oh ill e-mail you privately about the sector 9 race!

Thanks to the brilliant staff of RJ UR! Niki, Kris, and Car, man you guys are the best! Thanks loads for always always being so cool with everything you do!

Cheers guys! Love you all!

The following story is courtesy of Ian Youngs from BBC News :

Led Zeppelin frontman Robert Plant has scotched rumours that he is to tour with the band, describing speculation as "frustrating and ridiculous".

Last week, The Sun newspaper reported that he had agreed to a reunion tour.

But he has not and will not go on the road with anyone for at least two years after finishing US dates with Alison Krauss on 5 October, a statement said.

"Contrary to a spate of recent reports, Robert Plant will not be touring or recording with Led Zeppelin," it said.

"Anyone buying tickets online to any such event will be buying bogus tickets."

The rock legends got back together for a one-off concert, their first for 19 years, in London last December.

At the time, promoters said 20 million people tried to register for tickets as soon as they became available.

Speculation has since been rife that the surviving members of the band, with Jason Bonham, son of their late drummer John, would hit the road for a highly lucrative tour.

"It's both frustrating and ridiculous for this story to continue to rear its head when all the musicians that surround the story are keen to get on with their individual projects and move forward," Plant said.

"I wish Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones and Jason Bonham nothing but success with any future projects."

Jeff Beck, Metallica,The Stooges, Chic, Wanda Jackson, Little Anthony and the Imperials, Run D.M.C., War and Bobby Womack are this year's nominees for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Of the nine, five will be inducted into the Cleveland museum at a ceremony scheduled for April 4 at Public Hall in Cleveland.

And yet, still no : Deep Purple, Alice Cooper (The original band), Grand Funk Railroad (Fat chance given their loathing from Rolling Stone Magazine back in the 70's), Jethro Tull, Rush or Yes. But, all is well as Madonna is in the hall. One would've thought the late great Stevie Ray Vaughan would have been a shoo in the first time, but I guess Stevie isn't deemed worthy enough compared to Run D.M.C.

As I was leaving the building at the end of the workday, I’d suddenly realized that it was really pouring out!  This has happened a number of times in the last couple of months and I’d gotten quite used to canceling whatever plans I might have made simply because going out at night in the rain without a car, is just really quite an inconvenience, plus i'd gotten sick recently from getting drenched in the rain.

So naturally my mind starting thinking, am I just not gonna go to the RJ Bar and miss this rare night of live music?  The mere thought tasted bad in my mouth and I shrugged it off deciding to just take things one at a time.  So I hung out for about an hour and a half or so, smoked a few cigarettes, enjoyed the sight of the falling rain, then when it sort of settled a little bit, I put my hood on, walked to the street and put my thumb on the road.  In no time I cought a cab and made my way to Rhea at The Fort.

We hung out a bit, talked about the rain and the bad internet connection and then McDonalds came up as a place to grab a bite.  One burger McDo meal down and were off to Jupiter for the gig!

Johnny Alegre, who put the gig together and got the amazing line up booked, was the first person we saw.  He told us that Garlic (who I was really dying to see!) wont be able to make it as Francis had a recording to attend to; and that Imago wouldn’t be playing either as Tim’s car had broken down somewhere quite a bit away and wasn’t gonna make the gig as a result.  So, it was down to The Johnny Alegre Trio, Fatal Posporos, and Rivermaya.  I quite liked the idea that each of them were gonna be playing longer sets to occupy the hours needed for the entire night but naturally was bummed out about the 2 cancellations.

Rhea and I made our way to the second level of the bar where there were couches as opposed to the other seats in the room and put up our feet and settled in.  We were in a very cooky mood and enjoyed a whole lot of jokes and laughed at some things I can’t even remember anymore.  Not too long after, Johnny and the Trio got onstage and began their set.

Wow!  Amazing!  The first song opens with Johnny leading a jazzy intro and then the rhythym section joins in for this beautiful melodic piece.  The song travels through series of dynamics and tempos and at different times throughout the song, the different member’s each had a chance to showcase a bit of what they could do to the song.  All in all is was a great track and I loved it and felt that it was really going to be one hell of a night.  Thank God we didn’t back out because of the rain!  A Herbie Hancock cover followed and though Rhea and I recognized it, neither of us could place the title.  It was so much fun watching and listening!  Hearing that hook of a guitar melody throughout the tune while Johnny had his share of soloing and going nuts just pushed my enthusiasm even further and got my head bobbing and my body swaying in my seat.

I don’t know how many songs were done in entirety but it was a great set!  Watching Johnny play with his new band, which he describes as “not bad, for a new band”, was a great treat for us and if you ask me, they could’ve played another hour and at no point would I have wanted to even use the bathroom.  Great set Johnny and your trio!  Im looking forward to seeing you guys again and hopefully in the near future!

Rivermaya, who was seated somewhat next to us, was introduced next and I wished them well before their set began.  Johnny, our host for the night, went onstage again to announce that Fatal Posporos were going to play their set first and that Rivermaya would follow after them.

We didn’t mind much.  One of the reasons that really got us interested in being there in the first place, besides wanting to see Garlic, was to see Fatal Posporos since it had been a really long time since they gigged as well!

And so they begin.  Aia borrowed Johnny’s guitar (which looked massive on her petite frame) because her’s was with an Imago bandmate who wasn’t there.  Kris spoke to the audience and introduced the band, mentioning how nervous they were playing the gig because it had been awhile  plus because they didn’t practice.  Kris, if that’s how you guys play without practicing, wow!!! Ang galeng nyo naman!

I loved their set!  It was really really cute, and watching 4 girls play what I would call old school punk mixed with a cute pop feel really got me listening!  Not to mention how cute they all were in between songs while entertaining the captive audience.  At one point while killing time onstage, they got a round of beers and asked the helpful hand of Jason (from Pedicab) to grab it for them.  3 beers and a glass of water.   Im a personal fan of drinking on stage because I know the good it does for me haha!  It was a great set and I really enjoyed it.  Even the dynamics of all the girls singing and doing different parts and handling this back up and what not was all so beautiful to me.  It was great musicianship done on simple songs with catchy choruses and feel good melodies.  And did I mention how cute they all were?!

By the end of their set, we were quite set as well and were pretty much getting ready to leave, what with an early start of work the next day right?  Not like we could’ve stayed the entire night anyway.  But regardless, we wanted to catch Rivermaya being it must have been at least a couple of months since either of us had seen them.  To give you an example of how long it had been, Jason’s hair was long.  Whereas the last time I saw them it was still short, to be completely honest, I didn’t even recognize him at first when I saw him fiddling with his guitar before the other 3 arrived.

They had some guests in the audience, listers I assume from their yahoogroups and/or fans club.  And the energy was great as they, and 4 to 5 of their technicians were onstage readying the band for their set, also the last set of the night.  And finally, after setting up and preparing an extra acoustic guitar as well as one of those fairly new funky electric guitars which pretty much sound acoustic, the band was ready and launched into their first song.  Admittedly, im not all that familiar with all of the bands songs.  Naturally I know the common played tracks and probably their singles as well as a few here and there, but in no way am I knowledgable of all their songs.  But regardless, I loved their first song.  To me, it was a song all of them equally enjoyed playing and equally loved as well,  It was a good song.  Kind of dark at times, with maybe an 80’s new wave a’la Depeche Mode mood.  Music just playing and not doing anything fancy and straight up vocals.  I dug it and was happy to see them again!  A large roar of an applause succeeded their opening number and before long they were playing their 2nd then 3rd then 4th song.  Also a nice site to see was one of their techs onstage playing that funky guitar and doing the rythym guitar bits.  I expected him to be there for perhaps just that one song but he stayed on stage and played with the band up until I left.

The set was enjoyable and hearing them play as tight as they were with everyone contributing to the vocal duties was a great sight to see and treat to the ear.  I really don’t want to compare but I would say that Jason’s influences as a singer must have been deeply influenced by Rico Blanco.  Anyway, why else would he have auditioned for the part if he wasn’t a fan of the band to begin with right?  Imagine Arnel Pineda being a KISS fan then auditioning for Journey, that would have been a nightmare.  So no offense to the boys and team of Rivermaya and to Rico himself, for comparing Jason to Rico, but I just noticed that many of the singing styles were very much like Rico himself, except for particular tones that is.

Anyway, Rhea and I went for a cigarette break, our first for the entire night and quite enjoyed ourselves downstairs being away from the music and people.  We really did mean to leave, but when we went up, heading home after this great night, that brought us many joys and laughs and good memories, wouldn't be a bad idea.  We planned to do a quick French exit, as we always do, but managed to say bye to Johnny who was ecstatic that though Rivermaya was only asked to do a few songs, they decided to do a whole concert worth of material.  ( Japs at this point was in the audience as Mark played the acoustic guitar onstage ) We said bye to Japs as well as to Donna, an odysseylive friend who was there as well with a friend of hers.

Eternal thanks to Johnny for bringing such eclectic music together and for providing us music fans a venue to enjoy great music to!  You’re the man, man!  We cant wait for the next Sneakernet Event!

Rayms and I at Myxmo 2007!

So i rang Rayms yesterday to ask about any possible information on a possible part II of their reunion because it is rumored to be on December 30 this year.  He was able to confirm with me that no plans have been made and that there are no talks of it yet, at least not until all is well with Ely.  So, lets all just keep our fingers crossed and hope that Ely will be well enough to be able to play again and that someone produces the show!

Whoever is spreading the rumors of the December 30 gig is simply making it up....
